Free From Durance Vile... Kind Of... (Valcos 00)

(This is my character record and notes for the Pathfinder 2nd Ed AGENTS OF EDGEWATCH adventure path. SPOILERS if you haven't played it yet. You've been warned!)

Free From Durance Vile (Valcos 00)

The criminal, widely known as Valcos, was escorted in manacles in front of the magistrate of the Coins district of Absalom. The Coins was home to much of the legal and illegal trade within Absalom, and the transient nature of its merchant population facilitated the illicit exchange of drugs and other contraband. For five years, Valcos had practiced his trade within the district, selling dreams to the greedy - of which there was never a paucity. Valcos lived by the saying, "It is impossible to cheat an honest person." So he felt little moral qualm about selling false rubies at a tenth of their reputed value "because cruel Fate had stuck his family down," forcing him to sell these "family heirlooms" to raise quick cash and other such "deals." known as the "Token Guard," had arrested Valcos in The Saucy Wench mead hall, one of the few permanent structures in the Grand Bazaar.

Valcos had chosen the wrong victim, selling those worthless gewgaws to a fellow in a dark alley. Ordinarily, the city watch in the district (called the "Token Watch") would not bestir themselves for a mere con game, but it so happened that Valcos' victim was the cousin of Lady Kythes Finch, the watch captain.

In less than a week, Valcos had been arrested, tried, and sentenced to ten years imprisonment.

"Prisoner Valcos, you were found guilty of swindling and sentenced to ten years imprisonment." The magistrate read a note on the scroll. "It says you have served three years with good behavior." The magistrate looked up and caught Valcos' eyes. "We have an offer for you.  Since your crime was not violent and you have been an easy prisoner, we will release you on limited parole to assist the Edgewatch, a new division of the city watch, in managing the peace at the Radiant Festival. You will be under watch supervision while on duty and returned to a holding cell when off-duty; the time you spend in service will count for a reduction in your sentence as time served."

"I accept," said Valcos. The last three years had been an exercise in tedium. While potentially dangerous, at least the food was likely to be better.
