The Catacombs of Ascendent Court (Part III)

Tyrroicese

The squad unlocks the portcullis on both sides and enter the Eldritch Tomb. Narrow compartments and niches line the walls from floor to ceiling in this sizable rectangular burial chamber, creating innumerable pockets for urns and other ornate burial containers. To the south, a portcullis separates the room from a broad hallway with shallow steps. A rusty iron lever protrudes from the southern wall, near the portcullis. Corridors exit the chamber to the southeast and southwest and seem to rise, loop around, and reconnect in the northeast and northwest, where they form a balustraded walkway fifteen feet above the rest of the chamber.

A 30' tall construct made of mechanics and ochre jelly attacks. The construct, named Tyrroicese, has one of the Greycloaks for which they sought imprisoned in it's chest cavity. Simi pulls the body out of the construct and heals the Greycloak (named Quordein)

The construct has many immunities, so while the squad fought Valcos healed his comrades as much as he could with battle medicine and potions of Healing.

The construct summoned an Ochre Jelly for assistance. Valcos tries to distract it with a lit torch, while Pumpelio instigated a sonic attack before helping Mr. Gone and then Grimwald with a Hymn of Healing.  Simi and Grimwald used bludgeoning weapons on Tyrroicese. Simimel invoked a Litany Against Wrath on the construct.

After managing to defeat the construct, the squad made short work of the Ochre Jelly.

The squad gently questioned Quordein, and found that her companions had run off to the north. Heading north, they found themselves in a hallway. the broad hallway to the south abruptly ends, forming a ledge that overlooks a broad, deep cavern forty feet below, half of which is submerged in murky, slowly flowing water. To the west is a stone door. To the east, a brief corridor makes a right turn and appears to go downward.

The squad headed west, discovering the rest of the Greycloaks in what they called the Sanctuary.

Devlin Brottager

The furniture and statuary of this long shrine chamber are in a state of utter disarray—pews, torch stands, and even the room’s chandelier have been piled up near the room’s only entrance. At the opposite end of the chamber, a single large statue cast in bronze has been left standing behind a stone altar securely fastened to the floor tiles. The statue depicts none other than Absalom’s fallen patron deity, Aroden, along with a classical rendition of the Starstone. Both of Aroden’s arms are raised above his head as though holding the shining eight-sided star, made of a large and immaculately cut quartz crystal, aloft.

Devlin Brottager, Kristin Malopedes, and Horlo Higgens were delighted that their companion had been rescued, and the squad escorted them to safety. At the Greycloaks base, the squad filed reports, healed, and slept before returning to the Sanctuary.

Simi discovered a secret door behind the statue, which led to another room. Stone shelves and tables line the walls of this rectangular antechamber. Pale light comes into the chamber via a short hallway to the west, which terminates in a stone door that has been left propped open. To the north, a narrow corridor takes a sharp right turn and descends into darkness. To the east, the room’s tiles change to faded blue bricks that line a small alcove.

The cramped corridors of the Catacombs give way to a broad swath of mostly flat rock outdoors, situated on the outer rim of the chasm that surrounds the Starstone Cathedral. The escarpment, which might resemble a vast balcony if not for the lack of balustrades, overlooks the abyss. A large ceiling of rock sixty feet up casts a shadow over the area. To the northeast and southeast, doors mark entrances to the subterranean Catacombs.

The Flesh Golem, Carvey

A flesh golem named Carvey and two ape-like Ceustodaemons guarded this chamber.

Before anyone could react, Simi knocked the flesh golem off the cliff, where it shattered into a pile of inanimate wreckage.

The squad engaged the Ceustodaemons, which could breathe fire.  Valcos distracted one near the edge of the cliff, where Mr. Gone knocked off the edge, but the demonic simian caught a hold and began climbing back up. Valcos stabbed at it but was unable to prevent it from cresting the edge - just in time for Simimel to shield-rush it off the edge again.

Meanwhile, Grimwald was being mauled by the other Ceustodaemon, before he and Mr. Gone had it almost destroyed. Pumpelio casts a Chromatic Ray and overloaded its system with virulent poison. It's body vanished in smoke as it was banished back to the Hell from which it came.

Once more the cliffside Ceustodaemon had started up again, and this time Simi knocked it far enough into space that it fell, at last, to its discorporate destruction.

Valcos applies first aid all around while they ponder next steps!

The Catacombs of Ascendent Court (Part II)

Wraith of Unusual Size

While examining the traps protecting the Treasure Vault, the party was attacked by a group of barrow-wights led by a Wraith of Unusual Size. The Wraith phased through the walls to attack us from the other side of the trapped bars, and screamed like a Banshee (no banshees were harmed in the making of this encounter) when hit it repeatedly with the Sunbolt spell.

The squad dealt the barrow-wights after Simi destroyed the wraith. The traps guarding the vault were disarmed by Valcos and Pumpelio acting as a team. Those with arcane knowledge identified several valuable magic items, and those they could not use were taken as evidence. Heading west and north, the squad encountered a hallway with spectral grasping hands, which attempted to slow them and drain life energy, but after they were revealed they were swiftly bypassed.

At the end of the corridor were a pair of double doors that passed into the Crypt of the Headless Horseman. This ten-foot-wide hallway forms a ring. Exiting the ring are a large pair of stone doors to the south and a hall that quickly ends in caved-in rubble to the west. Just north of the cave-in, a narrow, hollowed-out tunnel in the twenty foot-tall ceiling also indicates a potential point of egress. Within the ring is a cylindrical ossuary, accessible from the northern side of the ring via a wrought-iron door made of vertical bars tipped with ornamental castings of cantering horses, javelins, pennants, and other heraldic symbols. A splendid rectangular tomb fills the center of the central ossuary, on top of which is a life-size statue of an ivory cavalier mounted atop a rearing onyx-black steed. The room is guarded by Black Puddings. The Black Puddings were, at length, destroyed, and one of the remains yielded a copper key to the portcullis.

Black Pudding

Searching the area, Valcos unlocked a door leading to a staircase leading to a subterranean passage. They found their way to the Viewing Room, where they engaged a Skinsaw cultist named Dannicus in conversation. Dannicus and his friend Gubbs (who had failed to make the rendezvous) have decided to leave the cult, and in exchange for safe passage out, Dannicus drew the squad a rough map of the Skinsaw cult area. The squad escorted him to safety, and went back to the portcullis before resting.

Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Prescience (Part 3) - Blackfriars

After the squad fought the Blackfriar Priest and the Poison Eaters, they made their way deeper into the basement of the Blackfriars Temple. ...
